Dieses Kapitel befasst sich mit Sehen als soziokulturellem Prozess sowie mit der Frage, ob ein Sehen, das über etablierte Kategorien hinausgeht, möglich ist. Nowicka zeichnet darin Versuche nach, Andere in Bezug auf Geschlecht, Sexualität, race und Ethnizität in klar abgrenzbare Gruppen einzuordnen. Ausgehend von Forschung in Kognitionswissenschaft und Philosophie untersucht sie, wie wir von unstrukturierten sensorischen visuellen Erfahrungen zu einzelnen sozialen Kategorien gelangen. Im Mittelpunkt des Kapitels steht dabei die Frage nach anderen Möglichkeiten und Kategorien, die einer intersektionalen Erfahrung des In-der-Welt-Seins besser entsprechen. Schließlich verweist das Kapitel auf die zentrale Rolle, die Aufmerksamkeit in diesem Kontext zukommt, und diskutiert sowohl die Bedeutung des wissenschaftlichen Blicks als auch das Potential künstlerischer Auseinandersetzung in Bezug auf intersektionalere Sichtweisen.

Diese Forschungsarbeiten beziehen sich routinemäßig auf race oder rassifizierte Gruppen, was im Widerspruch zum wissenschaftlichen Konsens steht, dass es keine biologischen ‚Rassen‘ gibt. In experimentellen Studien zu Kognition und Stereotypisierung wird häufig Software eingesetzt, um Gesichtsmerkmale, die mit Geschlecht und race verbunden werden, zu verändern. Es ist unklar, ob die Software, wie etwa Gesichtserkennungssoftware, selbst bereits rassistisch beeinflusst ist, was sich wiederum auf die Forschungsergebnisse auswirken könnte. Möglicherweise entsprechen die Modifikationen einem Spektrum von Gesichtsmerkmalen, aber die für die Datenanalyse vorgenommene Kategorisierung ist ihrerseits von Stereotypen verzerrt.
