Zusammenfassung

Clifford Geertz war ein US-amerikanischer Kulturanthropologe, der vor allem mit seinem Kulturbegriff einen fundamentalen Beitrag zur interkulturellen Kommunikationsforschung leistete. Er gilt als Begründer der symbolischen Anthropologie und als einer der einflussreichsten Kulturanthropologen aller Zeiten. Bekanntheit erlangt er vor allem durch seine ethnographischen Studien auf Bali und Java, in denen er Gesellschaftssysteme durch Symbolik (z. B. Hahnenkämpfe) erforschte. Die von ihm geprägte Dichte Beschreibung ist heutzutage eine weit verbreitete Methodik der qualitativen Sozialforschung; sein Kulturbegriff als „Bedeutungsgewebe“ wird in zahlreichen Studien aufgegriffen. Mit seinen Arbeiten prägte er zudem den kulturellen, ethischen und wissenschaftlichen Pluralismus in den Sozialwissenschaften. Sein Werk The Interpretation of Cultures gilt als eines der bedeutendsten und meistzitierten Werke der Forschung zur interkulturellen Kommunikation.

„We must, in short, descend into detail, past the misleading tags, past the metaphysical types, past the empty similarities to grasp firmly the essential character of not only the various cultures but the various sorts of individuals within each culture, if we wish to encounter humanity face to face.“ (Geertz 1973a, S. 53)
