Zusammenfassung
Das Anthropozän bezeichnet ein geologisches Zeitalter, in dem die Menschheit zur dominanten geologischen Kraft geworden ist. Auch in der Umweltsoziologie ist das Anthropozän ein wichtiger Bezugspunkt geworden, weil es umweltsoziologischen Intuitionen über den intrinsischen Zusammenhang von Natur und Gesellschaft entgegenkommt und neue (inter)disziplinäre Anknüpfungspunkte eröffnet. Der Beitrag rekonstruiert zunächst die Diskussionen zur angemessenen Datierung und Benennung des kontemporären Erdzeitalters. So wird sichtbar, dass das Anthropozän nicht nur eine geologische Epochenbeschreibung darstellt, sondern sich mit sozialwissenschaftlichen Periodisierungen (Beginn des Kapitalismus, des Kolonialismus, der Moderne, der Industrialisierung etc.) überschneidet. Anschließend beleuchtet der Beitrag die epistemische Situierung und politische Performativität des Anthropozänbegriffs. Es wird gezeigt, wie die Erdsystemwissenschaft das Konzept gezielt lanciert hat und sich selbst als entscheidende reflexive Kraft innerhalb des Anthropozäns verortet. Der Beitrag identifiziert drei zentrale umweltsoziologische Herausforderungen des Anthropozäns. Erstens lassen sich die großen Erzählungen über die moderne Gesellschaft auf die Anthropozändebatte beziehen. Umgekehrt kann die Anthropozändebatte dabei helfen die „planetarische“ bzw. ökologische Dimension dieser großen Erzählungen besser in den Blick zu bekommen. Zweitens lässt sich das Anthropozän aus einer Beobachterperspektive zweiter Ordnung als spezifisches wissenschaftliches und politisches Skript analysieren, das aktuelle gesellschaftliche Initiativen mobilisieren, um ökologische Probleme zu rahmen und zu bearbeiten. Drittens regt die Anthropozändebatte dazu an unterschiedliche Themen- und Problemfelder der Umweltsoziologie stärker aufeinander zu beziehen, um so den soziologischen Blick auf den „globalen Wandel“ sozialer Naturverhältnisse zu schärfen.
