Abstract

This chapter will examine the understanding of the concepts of “Peace” and “Education” according to the Qur’an and the lived example of the Prophet Muhammad. It will then reflect on the importance of utilizing this understanding to develop a paradigm for educating Muslims for peace in the bitterly divided and highly polarized contemporary world. In this context, reference will be made to the long history of Islam and Muslims being seen as the “other” in the Christian West. The negative imaging and stereotyping of Islam and Muslims that is embodied in the escalating Islamophobia in western countries raises the question of whether educating Muslims for peace is possible or desirable in cultural or political milieus in which Islam and Muslims are demonized and genuine interest in understanding them without bias is scant.
