Abstract

This chapter highlights the dwindling Western lead in military technology, particularly at a time where armed forces are confronted with dynamic developing emerging and disruptive technologies that are likely to drive developments in hybrid warfare in the forthcoming years. 19 technologies have been identified as particularly relevant for the evolution of hybrid challenges, conflict and warfare namely: 5G, additive manufacturing, artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, biotechnology, cloud computing, communication networks, cyber and electronic warfare, distributed ledger, directed energy, extended reality, hypersonics, internet of things, microelectronics, nano-materials, nuclear modernisation, quantum sciences, space assets, and ubiquitous sensors. It appears that in several of these technologies Russia and China already have an edge with regard to military applications in hybrid warfare.
