Zusammenfassung

Die Urteile der einschlägigen Literatur sind eindeutig: Der Begriff des Gemeinwohls ist für die politische Rhetorik von großer Bedeutung, intuitiv für viele Menschen nachvollziehbar und doch nur schwer zu definieren, da er abhängig ist vom jeweiligen soziopolitischen Kontext. Die Auseinandersetzung mit den Gemeinwohlkonzeptionen des 19. Jahrhunderts lohnt sich dennoch, nicht zuletzt deshalb, weil die Politik nun zunehmend vom Streit der Parteien und Ideologien beeinflusst wird. Die Französische Revolution hat nochmals das republikanische Gemeinwohlideal beschwört, gleichzeitig gewinnt ein liberales Verständnis an Einfluss. Die Analyse konservativer, liberaler, utilitaristischer und sozialistischer Theorien erlaubt es, die Ursachen und Motive der Konflikte besser zu verstehen.
