Zusammenfassung
Unter dem Oberbegriff der digitalen Spaltung beschäftigt sich die kommunikationswissenschaftliche Internetforschung mit sozialen und transnationalen Disparitäten im Zugang zu und in der Nutzung von digitalen Technologien im Allgemeinen und des Internets im Besonderen. Sie knüpft damit an die unter dem gleichen Label geführte politische Auseinandersetzung um die Gefahr einer neuen sozialen Ungleichheit in der Informationsgesellschaft und den Möglichkeiten ihrer Prävention an. In Analogie zu den theoretischen Positionen der Wissenskluftforschung geht die Forschung zur digitalen Spaltung von der generellen Annahme aus, dass die Verbreitung und gewinnbringende Verwendung der digitalen Technologien vom sozioökonomischen Status einer Person (Mikroebene) und von der volkswirtschaftlichen Potenz eines Landes (Makroebene) begünstigt wird und sich damit bestehende soziale und transnationale Klüfte durch die Verbreitung dieser Technologien eher verstärken als verringern. Der Ertrag dieser inzwischen weit gefächerten Forschung besteht neben einer umfangreichen Dokumentation der weltweiten Internet-Verbreitung im empirischen Nachweis zahlreicher Zugangs- und Nutzungsklüfte, die ungeachtet aller politischen Bemühungen über die Zeit hinweg weitgehend stabil bleiben und deren Konfiguration im Sinne der Ausgangsthese darauf hindeutet, dass jene, die in ökonomischer, kultureller oder sozialer Hinsicht eine bessere Startposition einnehmen, im Zuge der Internet-Verbreitung ihre gesellschaftliche Ausgangsstellung festigen oder gar verbessern können.
