Zusammenfassung

Dieses Kapitel führt in einige zentrale wissenschaftstheoretische Begriffe ein und legt die epistemologischen Grundlagen für mögliche kausale Erklärungen in den Sozialwissenschaften und insbesondere in der Politikwissenschaft. Diese können auf naturalistischen, probabilistischen, konfigurationellen (mengentheoretischen) oder prozessanalytischen Ansätzen beruhen. Sie haben jeweils spezifische Stärken und Schwächen und erstrecken sich, je nach Fallzahl, auf unterschiedliche Anwendungsbereiche. Die jüngeren wissenschaftstheoretischen Debatten und Entwicklungen auf diesem Gebiet werden so verdeutlicht.
