Zusammenfassung
„Secularization in Western Europe 1848–1914“ widmet sich einer Zeit, in der auf vielen Feldern der Säkularisierungsprozess an Intensität gewinnt bzw. vorbereitet wird, der dann im 20. Jahrhundert massiv einsetzen wird. McLeod zeichnet viele Weichenstellungen und Entwicklungen nach, die uns trotz ihrer Historizität sehr aktuell vorkommen: Konflikte zwischen religiösen, politischen und wissenschaftlichen Akteuren, Fragen einer Trennung von religiöser und anderen Sphären, innerreligiöse Pluralisierungen und neue, konkurrierende Sinnstiftungen. Im Zentrum der Studie stehen England, Frankreich und Deutschland. McLeod wertet die verfügbaren Statistiken zum Kirchgang aus, erweist sich aber auch als Kenner der zeitgenössischen Literatur und intellektueller Debatten; wir blicken mit ihm sowohl in bischöfliche Stellungnahmen, als auch in Zeitungsglossen und erhalten am Ende ein beeindruckend reiches Bild einer ereignis- und folgenreichen historischen Epoche.
