Zusammenfassung
Die Produktion von Gütern hat nach wie vor einen fundamentalen Einfluss auf den globalen Handel und die globale Wirtschaftsleistung (Manyika et al. 2012, S. 6 ff.). Verschiedene Studien haben eine Zunahme der globalen Produktionsaktivitäten in den letzten Jahren gezeigt (Harre und Moya-Quiroga 2012, S. 1 ff.; United Nations 2013, S. 2 ff.). Insbesondere wird deutlich, dass Firmen zunehmend einen globalen Footprint aufbauen, diesen beibehalten und auch weiter ausbauen (United Nations 2013, S. 23 ff.). Genauso wie eine Vielzahl von unterschiedlichen Produkten existiert, existiert eine Vielzahl an Möglichkeiten, (globale) Produktionsaktivitäten zu gestalten. Dabei gibt es aber nicht eine einzige ideale Möglichkeit, welche für alle Unternehmen als globales Optimum zu werten ist. Vielmehr wird die konkret umsetzbare Lösung von strategischen Faktoren, der Unternehmensumwelt und verschiedenen anderen Faktoren beeinflusst. Die jeweilig „richtige“ Ausgestaltung der globalen Produktionsaktivitäten kann allerdings von Unternehmen als Wettbewerbsvorteil genutzt werden. Dies gelingt jedoch häufig nicht (Ferdows 2009, S. 1). Ziel dieses Kapitels ist es deshalb, dem Leser ein Grundverständnis von Themen im Kontext einer Produktionsstrategie und von (globalen) Produktionsnetzwerken zu vermitteln und ihm so zu ermöglichen, die Produktion als Erzeuger eines innovativen Wettbewerbsvorteils wahrzunehmen. Der Leser soll verstehen, welche Rolle die Produktion in der Umsetzung einer Geschäftsstrategie spielt und wie Produktionsstrategie, Konfiguration und Koordination von Produktionsnetzwerken zusammenspielen.
