Zusammenfassung

Demokratie ist eine umstrittene Herrschaftsordnung. Über ihren Kern, mehr noch ihre Konturen und Grenzen besteht kein Konsens. Dies gilt in der Sphäre der politischen Theorien wie in jener der empirischen Demokratieforschung. Begnügt man sich nicht mit Fallstudien, etwa über die Demokratie in Großbritannien, sondern vergleicht wenige (small-N) oder viele Demokratien (large-N) miteinander, benötigt man ein tertium comparationis, ein klares Konzept der Demokratie als Referenzmodell. Andernfalls weiß der Betrachter oder Leser nicht, wovon die Rede ist. Bei Max Weber (1976) ist dies der „Idealtypus“, in moderneren und politikwissenschaftlich weiter entwickelten Typologien wird dies als Ursprungskonzept oder root concept (Collier/Levitsky 1997) bezeichnet.
