Abstract

Over one billion people in developing countries suffer from infectious diseases that are not curable or that show widespread resistance to current medication. Therefore new concepts besides the traditional optimization approaches for the identification of potential new drugs against these neglected diseases are badly needed. The utilization of crop protection knowhow for the identification could become an important avenue for the discovery of new drugs against these diseases. Despite the seemingly unrelated topics, very promising results especially against malaria and Chagas disease could be achieved using this approach.
