Abstract
Colorectal surgery is a commonly used treatment for various benign and malignant colorectal diseases, such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), diverticulitis, intestinal polyposis, and colorectal cancer. The surgical technique is chosen according to the severity of disease and to the extent of the involved bowel segment. Recent surgical techniques include segmental resection, sphincter-preserving surgery, and radical resection.
Diagnostic imaging is important for accurate assessment of the postoperative colon, demonstrating expected anatomic changes and the presence of postoperative complications. Multidetector-row computed tomography (MDCT) has become the mainstay of postoperative imaging owing to recent technical advancement. In this chapter, we review the types and expected usual findings of colorectal resection and describe the imaging features of postoperative complications.
