Abstract
Hyperglycaemia is defined as an inappropriately high plasma glucose which is generally considered at glucose levels higher than 200 mg/dl (111 mmol/l). For the fasting state, glucose values exceeding 126 mg/dl (7 mmol/l) are consistent with hyperglycaemia and diabetes. However, symptoms of hyperglycaemia may often be noticeable only with much higher plasma glucose levels. The cause of hyperglycaemia is a relative or an absolute insulin deficiency which is most often a consequence of diabetes.
