Zusammenfassung
In den meisten westlichen Ländern hat die neonatale Mortalität (Anzahl der in den ersten 28 Lebenstagen verstorbenen Früh- und Neugeborenen pro 1000 Lebendgeborene) während der letzten Dekaden kontinuierlich abgenommen. In Deutschland hat sich die neonatale Sterblichkeit in den letzten 25 Jahren mehr als halbiert: Sie liegt bei weniger als 3 pro 1000 Lebendgeborenen. Die meisten dieser Kinder versterben innerhalb der ersten Lebenstage. Die häufigsten Ursachen der neonatalen Sterblichkeit sind die Frühgeburtlichkeit und nicht mit Leben vereinbare schwere Fehlbildungen.
