Abstract
The paleoclimate simulations performed by the Flexible Global Ocean–Atmosphere–Land System model (FGOALS) are analyzed here under the framework of the Paleoclimate Modelling Intercomparison Project (PMIP). The two latest versions of FGOALS, Grid-point version 2.0 and Spectral version 2.0, appear able to reproduce reasonably well the large-scale climate changes in response to forcings in the mid-Holocene (MH), in the last glacial maximum (LGM), and in the mid-Pliocene. For example, the models reproduce the enhanced monsoon systems in the Northern Hemisphere during the MH and the cold and dry climate in the LGM; the global warming in the mid-Pliocene is also simulated within the range suggested by proxy reconstructions. However, data–model comparisons highlight potential model deficiencies in simulating regional climate changes.
