Abstract

Many liver masses are sampled by fine needle aspiration. Rapid on-site cytologic evaluation is becoming the standard of care for the procurement of cytologic material for liver biopsies. Understanding the selection criteria for the method of sampling, the risks and benefits to the patient, and the ability to make accurate cytologic diagnosis is valuable to nonpathologists. This chapter reviews the common features of liver cytology on benign and malignant tumors so that a noncytologist will understand the nomenclature used in pathology reports and have a grasp on limitations of interpretation and how ancillary studies are used.
