Abstract

People often are in the habit of consuming many types of products; some of these products are legal, while others are illegal. Many of these products have profound effects on the cardiovascular system. The chapter will discuss many of these deleterious products, such as tobacco, cocaine, and amphetamines, and will describe their devastating effects on the cardiovascular system. It will also explore products such as tea and wine that may provide some cardiovascular benefits. The chapter will also briefly discuss the trend toward legalizing marijuana before a careful scientific study of the benefit–risk ratio has been done. At the conclusion of the chapter, physicians will find information to assist them in providing sound advice to their patients to help promote a healthy lifestyle.
