Abstract

The research work aimed to present the applicability of the fracture mechanics for the assessment of the integrity of structural elements having cracks or crack like defects. Based on fracture mechanical materials characteristics, reliability assessment calculations were realised on two structural element models: internal, radial, semi-elliptical surface crack in a pressurized pipe and internal, longitudinal, semi-elliptical surface crack in a pressurized pipe. Different crack geometries were assumed, and stress intensity factors and safety factors were determined for all cases. After this, critical crack sizes were calculated, which belong to a relevant safety factor (n = 3). The results of the calculations clearly demonstrate the dangerousness of the cracks or crack like defects.
