Abstract
Many patients with osteoarthritis of the hip and prior sports participation are candidates for total hip arthroplasty (THA). Although they participated in sports activities previously, they are no longer able to as a result of arthritic hip pain. Regular exercise and participation in low-impact sports have beneficial effects on health and fitness. Osteoarthritic patients who return to routine low-impact activities typically experience improvement in cardiovascular fitness and health after joint replacement. Following THA many patients are also capable of participation in high-impact activities. However, excessive high-impact activities may limit the longevity of the prosthetic components due to cyclic repetitive stresses on the implant fixation and bearing surfaces. THA patients are able to participate in many low-impact and some high-impact sports after surgery. However, in comparison to their preoperative sports activity level, THA patents typically decrease the level of impact but also increase the frequency of low-impact sports participation.
