Abstract
Hemipelvectomy or hip disarticulation are rare operations. The most common indication is radical treatment of a sarcoma where limb-sparing surgery is not possible. The operations have a high incidence of infection and a risk of tissue necrosis which seems highly correlated to impaired blood flow in the covering flaps. After hemipelvectomy many patients suffer from bladder ad bowel incontinence, but the evidence for the incidence is poor. In younger people prosthetic rehabilitation after amputation is possible, but only about 25 % of the patients use their prosthesis regularly and often only for the stand phase.
