Abstract

Exposures of the hip joint have evolved with the changing pattern of indications for hip surgery and availability of practical solutions. It was not until the advent of general anaesthesia that planned surgery was made possible. The indications have changed from the mere “release of evil humours” to joint excision, osteotomy, replacement first partial then total, and presently to the management of consequent complications.
