Spine Surgery Basics

Abstract

The primary focus of this chapter is to discuss the most encountered causes of thoracic kyphosis in pediatric patients. While the focus is on the type of pediatric hyperkyphosis that most often leads to surgical intervention, Scheuermann kyphosis, a number of other etiologies are also discussed. These include postural, iatrogenic, and congenital kyphoses, as well as thoracolumbar kyphosis from hypoplasia. Special attention is also given to iatrogenic kyphosis and how it can be avoided following laminectomy. Surgical and nonsurgical interventions are detailed, as are the standards of postoperative care and the potential complications of surgery.
