Zusammenfassung
Verschlussprozesse der extrakraniellen A. carotis sind zum weit überwiegenden Teil unmittelbar an der Karotisbifurkation bzw. in den ersten 2–3 cm nach Abgang der A. carotis interna lokalisiert. Entsprechend erfährt dieser Bereich im Folgenden die größte Beachtung. Stenosen und Verschlüsse werden dabei aus didaktischen Gründen getrennt betrachtet. Stenosen im weiteren Verlauf der A. carotis interna bis zur Schädelbasis sind demgegenüber seltener. Aufgrund einiger beachtenswerter Unterschiede bei der Ultraschalldiagnostik werden sie in einem eigenen Abschnitt diskutiert. Den Abschluss bilden Verschlussprozesse der A. carotis communis und externa, die aufgrund ihrer untergeordneten Bedeutung nur relativ kurz gestreift werden.
