Zusammenfassung
Praktikable Umlaufbahnen sind auf den Raum im und innerhalb des geostationären Erdgürtels begrenzt und nutzbare Frequenzen auf das Spektrum oberhalb Gleichstrom bis – theoretisch – 1 THz1, dem elektromagnetischen Bereich, beziehungsweise bis 1 PHz2, dem optischen Bereich. Neben der physikalischen Nutzbarkeit begrenzt die Geräteverfügbarkeit die Anwendung, und schließlich müssen sich mehr als zwanzig verschiedene Satellitenfunkdienste ein Spektrum von nicht einmal 50 GHz teilen.
Die zwei wesentlichen Rohstoffe der satellitengestützten Fernmeldetechnik sind die Umlaufbahnen und das Frequenzspektrum. Beide gilt es, effizient und störungsfrei zu nutzen.

Relevant für die Antennengewinnentkopplung ist der topozentrische Winkel, also derjenige zwischen beiden Satellitenpositionen aus Sicht des Terminals auf der Erdoberfläche. Dieser ist stets größer als der geozentrische mit Referenz zum Erdmittelpunkt – im Beispiel werden 2,5° verwendet.
