Abstract
The quest for a youthful appearance has been a major segment of cosmetics and surgical procedures over the last decades. The age perception appears as a driver of social interactions, and it is therefore important to understand the link between physiological changes affecting the face with age and their impact on the way one is perceived. Several studies, ranging from psychological-based approaches to statistical ones, have tried to determine the facial cues that are mainly affecting the age perception. Taken as a whole, the results of these studies suggest that the perception of aging is highly influenced by the appearance of the lip area (volume and upper lip wrinkles) and the eye area (crow’s feet and under-eye wrinkles, dark circles, bags under the eyes) and the skin tone uniformity (brown spots, skin color uniformity).
