Abstract
This chapter covers the essential aspects of diagnostic cerebral angiography. The history of cerebral angiography is discussed, extending from the first human angiogram in 1927 to the present time. Indications are reviewed, and fundamental techniques are detailed, ranging from femoral artery puncture and upper extremity access techniques to methods of cerebrovascular catheterization and contrast injection. Basic catheters, wires, and contrast agents are discussed and illustrated. Necessary angiographic views are described and illustrated. Visualization of common cerebrovascular lesions is described. Special situations, such as diabetic patients, patients receiving anticoagulation, and pediatric and pregnant patients are explored. Lastly, the most common complications of cerebral angiography are detailed.
