Handbook of Technical Diagnostics

Abstract

This chapter considers structural health monitoring (SHM) for offshore structures from a general system level. Offshore structures are subject to static and dynamic loads and their influence will be outlined. Structural integrated sensor and measurement systems are used to monitor load distribution and enable lifetime prognosis of the structures. The latest state of the art related to sensor and measurement systems and SHM systems are given.

Notes

  1. 1.

In the offshore oil and gas industry, a distinction between towers and jackets is made. The piles of a tower’s foundation are grouted at the sea bottom, whereas the piles of a jacket’s foundation are driven through the legs and connected to the sub-structure at the top [3]. This distinction is not common in the offshore wind industry, and both towers and jackets are usually referred to as “jacket”. .

  4. 4.

Instead of “floating sub-structure”, the term “floating support-platform” is also used (see, e.g. [6]).
