Definition
Bilateral Exploration: Surgical dissection of both parathyroid and paratracheal regions with removal of abnormal Parathyroid glands.
Frozen section: Intraoperative pathologic analysis of removed tissue.
Intraoperative PTH Monitoring: Rapid sampling of Parathyroid Hormone (PTH) levels during surgical exploration.
Hyperparathyroidism results from overproduction of parathyroid hormone (PTH) by one or more parathyroid glands. Normally, when serum calcium drops, the parathyroid glands respond by producing PTH which aids in calcium absorption in the gut, recycling of calcium in the kidney, and release of calcium from the bones. In pathologic (neoplastic states), parathyroid surgery directly aims to surgically remove any hypertrophic parathyroid tissue.
Parathyroidectomy: Surgical removal of one or more parathyroid glands.
Primary hyperparathyroidism (1HPT): Is caused by an intrinsic defect in the parathyroid glands that results in excessive production and release of PTH.
