Abstract
Plaster of Paris is still the standard casting material despite the development of alternative 'synthetic'. The process involves the exothermic reaction of calcium sulphate hemihydrate with water to produce calcium sulphate dihydrate (gypsum):
(CaSO4)2∙H20 + 3H20 → 2CaSO4∙2H20 + heat
