Definition

A potentiometric biosensor can be defined as a device incorporating a biological sensing element connected to an electrochemical potential transducer. Potentiometric biosensors usually rely on a biochemical reaction leading to a simpler chemical specie and its subsequent electrochemical detection (NH4OH, CO2, pH, H2O2, …). The analytical signal generated by a potentiometric biosensor is an electrical potential.

A biosensor is an analytical device comprising a biological element capable to recognize an analyte, coupled to a transducer which generates a signal proportional to the concentration of the analyte.
