Zusammenfassung
Sowohl der erste als auch der zweite Irakkrieg wurde von vielen amerikanischen sowie einigen europäischen Politikern und Journalisten als eine Auseinandersetzung zwischen Demokratie und Diktatur, zwischen Freiheit und Despotie, zwischen Zivilisation und Barbarei dargestellt. Wachsamen Zeitgenossen ist nicht entgangen, dass dabei ganz ähnliche Dichotomien bemüht wurden wie die, mit deren Hilfe die antiken Griechen sich gegen ihre östlichen Nachbarn, vor allem die Perser, abgrenzten. Ja, man konnte bisweilen den Eindruck gewinnen, die Redenschreiber der amerikanischen Präsidenten verfügten über eine ausgezeichnete Kenntnis des herodoteischen Geschichtswerkes, in dessen Zentrum die Perserkriege des 5. Jh. stehen.
