Pneumocystosis

Intraocular Inflammation

Abstract

Pneumocystis was first isolated independently by Carlos Chagas in 1909 and by Antonio Carinii in 1910. Pneumocystis was identified as a new species in 1912 by Delanoë and Delanoë, who proposed the species name carinii. Initially misclassified as a protozoan, by 1988 Pneumocystis was shown to be a yeast-like fungus based on both morphologic and genetic factors. Within the Pneumocystis genus, multiple species have been described. The species that infects humans have recently been designated P. jirovecii, in honor of Otto Jirovec, who described human PCP in 1952. This reflects a recent nomenclature change from P. carinii, which is now the designation for the species that infects rats. The term “PCP” was retained, however, and refers to Pneumocystis pneumonia.
