Zusammenfassung
Dass wissenschaftliche Instrumente nicht einfach eine objektiv gegeben Realität abbilden gehört zu den Grundeinsichten der STS. Andrew Pickering weist mit seinem Begriff der Mangle of Practice auf die vielfältigen Unwägbarkeiten im Prozess der naturwissenschaftlichen Erkenntnis hin. Die schrittweise Herstellung wissenschaftlichen Wissens zeigt sich so als eine Abfolge von Ermöglichen und Einschränken, in der sowohl die wissenschaftlichen In-strumente, als auch die wissenschaftlichen Theorien und nicht zuletzt auch die Wissenschaft-ler selbst immer wieder transformiert und aneinander abgestimmt werden.

Von Pickering selbst wird die Mangle als „pragmatic realism“ (S. 183 ff.) gefasst, der weder von einer einfachen Korrespondenz zur Realität ausgeht (non-correspondence), noch überaus skeptisch in dieser Beziehung ist (non-sceptical). Dieser pragmatischer Realismus wird später von Pickering auch als nicht-skeptischen Antirealismus (ebd., S. 190) bezeichnet.
