Zusammenfassung

Lange Zeit war es verbreitet, Goffman ohne Einschränkungen dem Symbolischen Interaktionismus zuzurechnen. Das erscheint auf den ersten Blick auch naheliegend, da er in der Hauptzeit der 2. Chicagoer Schule dort studierte, seinen Masterabschluss erwarb und 1953 auch promovierte. Zu berücksichtigen ist allerdings, dass der Symbolische Interaktionismus nie ein geschlossenes Theorieprogramm und die dortige Lehreinheit in ihren intellektuellen Traditionen durchaus heterogen war. Noch zu Goffmans Lebzeiten wurden Stimmen laut, die die Unterschiede zwischen Goffman und dem Symbolischen Interaktionismus akzentuierten und dabei sogar so weit gingen, ihn als einen Vertreter des amerikanischen Strukturalismus zu etikettieren. Ausgehend von einer Skizzierung der Grundzüge des Symbolischen Interaktionismus und dem Aufzeigen von Verbindungslinien zu ausgewählten Vertretern (Blumer, Hughes und Becker) werden in diesem Beitrag die zentralen Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede aufgezeigt. Als Kern der Eigenständigkeit seines Theorie- und Forschungsprogrammes wird sein Versuch aufgefasst, in einer mikrosoziologischen Perspektive Handeln und Struktur zu verknüpfen.
