Zusammenfassung

Hannah Arendt denkt in ihrem Buch Vita activa oder Vom tätigen Leben (1960, s. Kap. 14) darüber nach, »was wir eigentlich tun, wenn wir tätig sind« (VA 12; vgl. Young-Bruehl 2006, 79; Auden 2006, 7). Arbeiten, Herstellen und Handeln sind auf die je eigene Weise daran beteiligt, die Welt menschlich zu machen, so dass die »Welt [...] eine Heimat« für alle werden kann (VA 14, 156, 153; DT 251, 310; vgl. Young-Bruehl 2006, 79 f.). Die Arbeit sichert »das Am-Leben-Bleiben des Individuums und das Weiterleben der Gattung « (VA 15), das Herstellen »errichtet eine künstliche Welt« (ebd.), d. h. es schafft relativ dauernde Dinge und Strukturen und hält so »der Sterblichkeit [der Menschen] [...], ihrem flüchtigen Dasein [...] Bestand « (ebd.) entgegen.
