Zusammenfassung

Gemeinhin bezeichnet der Begriff „Sweatshop“ Arbeitsbedingungen, die durch niedrige Löhne, lange Arbeitszeiten und erzwungene Überstunden sowie gesundheitsgefährdende Arbeitsbedingungen gekennzeichnet sind. Ursprünglich bezeichnete Sweatshop dabei eine bestimmte Form der Arbeitsorganisation, die ihren Anfang in der englischen Textilindustrie des 19. Jahrhunderts nahm. Dabei organisierten „Arbeitsvermittler“, die sogenannten „Sweater“, die Vergabe von Näharbeiten großer Bekleidungshäuser an einzelne Subunternehmer, die zumeist ungelernte Arbeiterinnen und Arbeiter in ihren Ateliers beschäftigten.
