Zusammenfassung
Der französische Soziologe Émile Durkheim veröffentlichte im Jahr 1897 Le suicide. Die starke Zunahme der Suizidraten in jener Zeit erregte die Gemüter, und man war allgemein der Überzeugung, dass sie mit der Auflösung der traditionellen sozialen Ordnung Ende des 19. Jhs. und dem Industrialisierungsdruck zusammenhing. Während die beobachtete Zunahme der Suizidraten aus heutiger Sicht wohl als methodisches Artefakt der Erhebungsverfahren gelten kann, ist die zentrale These von der Bindungskraft sozialer Systeme bis heute Ausgangspunkt zahlreicher Untersuchungen zu Modernisierungseffekten und gesellschaftlicher Integration in der Tradition von Durkheim (Stack 2000; Stack/Kposava 2016; Fernquist 2007).
