Zusammenfassung

Tocqueville war nach mehreren gleichlautenden Aussagen nicht gläubig in einem religiösen Sinne (z. B. OC XV, 2, 29, ausführlich vgl. Goldstein 1975 sowie Hidalgo 2006, Kap. 5). Den Verlust seiner katholischen Überzeugungen, den er als Jugendlicher erlitt, schildert er eindrücklich in einem Brief an Sophie de Swetchine (s. Kap. 17.13) und gesteht ihr zugleich, wie sehr er zeit seines Lebens darunter litt, seine metaphysischen Gewissheiten früh eingebüßt zu haben (OC XV, 2, 315).
