Zusammenfassung
Der Entwicklungs- und Künstlerinnenroman über das Leben einer homosexuellen Frau wurde wegen seiner Thematik kurz nach Erscheinen im Jahr 1928 in einem aufsehenerregenden Gerichtsprozess verboten. Inzwischen gilt er als Klassiker der lesbischen Literatur. Die Konzeption der Protagonistin und anderer Figuren stützt sich unter anderem auf die zeitgenössische Inversionstheorie von Henry Havelock Ellis' Sexual Inversion (1897) und dem im Roman genannten Richard von Krafft-Ebing. Dieser Theorie zufolge galt Homosexualität als biologisch determiniert und physisch manifest.
