Zusammenfassung

Das 1911 entstandene und 1915 veröffentlichte Gedicht stellt den Höhepunkt von Eliots Frühphase als Lyriker dar und zählt zu seinen am häufigsten anthologisierten Werken. Hier wurde zum ersten Mal in der englischen Literatur der Kanon des Poetischen aufgegeben und bewiesen, dass Trivial-Alltägliches zum Material eines ‚großen‘ Gedichts werden kann. Eliot brach bewusst mit den Traditionen der viktorianischen und georgianischen Lyrik, und griff zurück auf die sprachliche Dichte und die komplexen ‚conceits‘ (geistreiche Metaphern) der spätelisabethanischen Dramatiker und der Metaphysical Poets des 17. Jh.s (J. Donne, George Herbert etc.). In der präzisen Diktion, dem Konversationston und der eleganten Ironie der Verse ist auch der Einfluss des symbolistischen Lyrikers Jules Laforgue (1860–1887) zu spüren.
