Schulbildung in England; 1935 Umzug nach Korfu; Fanbrief an Henry Miller führte zu 45-jähriger Freundschaft und literarischem Austausch; 1941 Flucht nach Kairo, danach Alexandria; nach 1945 verschiedene diplomatische Stellen und Lehrtätigkeiten in Rhodos, Córdoba (Argentinien), Belgrad, Zypern und Frankreich; aufgrund von Unruhen Umzug nach Frankreich; vor allem für sein formal experimentelles, nahezu modernistisches Romanwerk um Kunst, Liebe und Sexualität berühmt; verfasste auch Gedichte, Dramen und Reiseliteratur.
