Zusammenfassung
Der im Jahr 1964 erschienene Roman bildet den ersten Teil einer Trilogie über die Māori-Kriege des 19. Jh.s. in Neuseeland. Es folgten The Needle's Eye, 1965 (Das Nadelöhr), und The Evil Day, 1967 (Der Unglückstag). Der Titel – ‚fliegender Fisch‘ – ist einer Redewendung der Māori entnommen und bezeichnet den Ersten, der in einer Schlacht getötet wird.
