Zusammenfassung
Der bereits 1798 geschriebene Roman wurde erst 1818 postum veröffentlicht. Bereits in ihren frühesten literarischen Versuchen hatte die Autorin den sentimentalen Liebesroman und den Schauerroman persifliert, z. B. in der Parodie „Love and Friendship“ (1790). In dieser Tradition steht auch Northanger Abbey, dessen Protagonistin Catherine Morland sich auf dem Weg zur Selbstfindung von den Denkklischees des Schauerromans löst. Northanger Abbey ist – Frances Burneys Evelina, or A Young Lady's Entrance into the World (1778) vergleichbar – ein Initiationsroman.
