Zusammenfassung
Die philosophischen Abhandlungen erschienen 1711 in drei Bänden. Der älteste Text der Sammlung von Essays zu Fragen der Ethik, Ästhetik, der Natur- und Religionsphilosophie ist vermutlich die „Inquiry Concerning Virtue and Merit“, die erstmals im Jahre 1699 von John Toland ohne Wissen und gegen den Willen Shaftesburys veröffentlicht wurde.
