Zusammenfassung
Diese 1839 erschienene und am 7. März 1862 in Lemberg uraufgeführte Tragödie in fünf Akten entstand bereits 1834 während Słowackis Exil in der Schweiz. Angelehnt an eine Volksballade sowie an eine Legende aus dem polnischen Altertum entstand ein Stück, in dem zwei Handlungsstränge miteinander verflochten werden: zum einen die Geschichte des verbannten Königs Popiel III. und zum anderen das Schicksal des Burgherrn Kirkor.
