Bereits ab 1763 Studium in Yale; nach Abschluss Lehrtätigkeit; 1773 Jurastudium bei John Adams in Boston; ab 1774 prominenter Anwalt in New Haven, später in Hartford; Verfasser populärer Verssatiren und satirischer Essays; mit der Übernahme politischer Ämter endete seine literarische Tätigkeit fast gänzlich; veröffentlichte 1820 eine zweibändige Sammlung seiner Werke.
