Die 1729 anonym erschienene Flugschrift gilt als eines der Meisterwerke der politischen Satire. Swift, zu diesem Zeitpunkt ein berühmter Schriftsteller und Dekan der anglikanischen St. Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin, prangerte darin die Ausbeutung der Iren durch das englische Kolonialregime an.
