Ausbildung zum Lehrer in England; 1964–1968 Studium der englischen Literatur an der Universität von Singapur; Lehrer, dann Tutor an der Universität von Malaya; 1970 Studium der südostasiatischen Literaturen an der Universität von Michigan in Ann Arbor, 1973 Promotion (Dissertation u. a. über Dichter wie Amir Hamzah, Chairil Anwar, Sitor Situmorang, Latiff Mohidin, und Rendra); Dozent und ab 1978 Professor für malaiische Sprache und Literatur an der Universiti Kebangsaan Malaya in Selangor; 2000–2005 Professur an der Universiti Sains Malaysia in Pinang; Gastprofessuren in den USA, Europa und Japan; publizierte zahlreiche Anthologien malaiischer Lyrik; übersetzte Yukio Mishima und Pablo Neruda; verfasste mehrere Essay-Bände und umfangreiche literaturwissenschaftliche Arbeiten.
