Zusammenfassung
Das 1965 publizierte Werk ist an der Schnittstelle von Politikwissenschaft, Soziologie und Wirtschaftslehre angesiedelt. Aus soziologischer und politologischer Perspektive befasst sich Olson mit sozialen Gruppen und Gewerkschaften, marxistischen Auffassungen von Staat und Klasse und der Orthodoxie von Interessengruppen oder Lobbies („pressure groups“). Der Untertitel signalisiert jedoch, dass es ihm im Grunde um öffentliche Güter („public goods“) und Gruppen- bzw. Organisationsformen geht, und dies hauptsächlich unter ökonomischen Gesichtspunkten, basierend auf den Arbeiten von Cournot, Pareto und Buchanan.
